According to Life Packed, “Plastic waste is a huge problem and a large contributor to climate change. Since the introduction of plastic in the 1950s, over 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic has been produced, with approximately half of that amount having been produced between 2005 and 2020. This is a huge amount of plastic… sitting in our landfills.”
If you are concerned about plastic pollution, consider swapping out the traditional shampoo and soap bottles for package-free bars. Not only are they environmentally friendly, but shampoo bars are a more concentrated, solid form of what you traditionally find in a bottle of shampoo.
Which Shampoo Bar Is Right For You?
Like liquid shampoos, you’ll want to choose the shampoo bar that is best for your hair type. You want to make sure you’re picking out the right formula for your hair type.
Here is how Altus Advantage defines hair types and needs so you can choose the best shampoo and conditioning bar for you.
Oily hair – Wash your hair every day or other day
Normal hair – Wash every three to four days
Dry hair – If you can go more than 5 days without washing your hair
Are All Shampoo Bars The Same?
There are a few different kinds of shampoo bars including soap-based, detergent-based, and those that are pH-balanced. Each has its own benefits.
Your hair has a pH of around 4.5 – 5.5. Soap shampoo has a pH of around 8 – 9, which means that your hair will have a harder time getting used to it. One simple solution is to use a vinegar rinse to soften your hair. It could be great for adding volume but may lead to frizziness, dryness, or hair breakage.
At Altus Advantage, our shampoo bar has a pH that is around 5, which is perfect for your hair. Although it is made with synthetic ingredients, we ensure that these ingredients are made with renewable resources and are good for your health.
Since shampoo bars are ultra-concentrated, you typically need less product — so they tend to last a lot longer than liquid shampoo. Typically, one bar is equal to about three bottles worth of shampoos. Both Good Juju and UpFront Cosmetics claim that their bars can be used for about 75 washes.
Can I Use A Shampoo Bar On Colored Hair?
Our formulas do well with colored hair but have not been tested with extremely damaged hair. The Altus Advantage owner has colored hair and has been using the Altus Advantage shampoo bars for a few years now without any issues.
We have been asked about a shampoo bar for grey and white hair. We are working on it.
Also, all products at Altus Advantage are sulfate-free. You’ll want to avoid sulfate shampoos if you have sensitive skin as they can be harsh on the scalp and may cause irritation.
How To Use Shampoo And Conditioner Bars

Shampooing is about cleaning your scalp and hair strands of sebum, soil, styling products, and so on. Conditioner treats those dry, fried, and split ends of hair. If you have a dry scalp, you can use the conditioner to moisturize. Those with an oily scalp will want to start at ¾ of your hair strand.
To get the best results from your shampoo bar, here are some best practices:
Wet your hair
Create a foamy lather in your hands before you add it to your hair
Work evenly on your scalp and throughout your hair using circular motions
Rinse thoroughly
